Gallery 2: The Making of Caligula
To the left, the original cover picture for the May 1980 Penthouse, featuring Mirella D'Angelo, and below, Mirella warms up between shots. Above, adjustments during the filming of the wedding feast for Proculas and Livia. (Mirella D'Angelo)
Above, a painter puts the finishing touches on a column, while to the right, two youths relax between shots. Below, a skilled artisan works on a statue. All were made from scratch!
To the right, a beautifully turned extra is measured for a skimpy Roman garment. On the Caligula sets, nudity is a way of life! Below, a bemused worker watches quietly while a Roman actress rehearses her upcoming scene. In this shot you can really see one of Danilo Donati's excellent mattes that were painted for the film.
