Danilo Donati
Danilo Donati was born in Suzzara, Italy in 1926. He died of heart failure in Rome, Italy, on December 1st 2001. Danilo was a two time Oscar winner in costume and production design. (He was nominated 5 times!) He started in film in 1959, the same year as Tinto Brass. Over his carrer he was a Costume designer, Production Designer, Set Decorator, and Art Director.

On the movie Caligula, Danilo was Art Director, and was also the Costume Designer, although he didn't get credit for that. As Art Director, Danilo also designed the 64 sets used for the film. Set Construction began in June 1975, and were torn down in 1977 after the shooting of "Messalina! Messalina!.

Because of the nature of Caligula, Danilo got no respect from the film community for his work, but everyone who saw the film knew that Danilo had surpassed himself.

Because Tinto Brass didn't use the sets as much as he could have, and the fact that they were still there, the quickie film "Messalina, Messalina" was shot in mid-1977, and released in August 1977. Danilo gets a credit on the movie for this, but the sets were really just left over from Caligula!
