The Torture Ward
Next
The original torture ward scenes were to be used during Nerva and Caligula's walk from the Phallic Slope to Tiberus's pool. In the final cut of the film you will see Malcolm McDowell peek behind white curtains, and you hear a whip and screams, but nothing more comes of it. Caligula does look behind one curtian, and you get a brief snippet of a guy on a stake. Caligula was supposed to see people being tortured for pleasure. Instead, these scenes were used sparingly during a vision of madness that Caligula has his second day at Capri. Some men speak badly about Tiberus, and Caligula listens from the sidelines. He visualizes the torture ward scenes here. They are very brief in this scene, and it is believed a lot more was shot and not used in the final edit.
