John Gielgud as Nerva, and to the right, Peter O'Toole as Tiberius. Nerva was from the old school, and thought Augustus was the best Emperor.
To the right, and the two pictures below are from the "Harem of the Monsters", which was Tiberius' pleasure grotto. Tinto Brass shot these very erotic scenes which were used very little in the final edit of the film, below, sex reflected in an old fashioned mirror.
Freaks, like the one above, were a prized possession of the Roman Emperors. The picture on the right is of Macro, who was the head of the Praetorian Guard, and a good friend of Caligula. Macro was played by Guido Mannari, a former soccer player and a well-known Italian actor. Below, Macro ends the life of the 2nd Emperor of Rome, Tiberius. The day was March 18th 37 AD, and it led the way for Caligula to become the 3rd Emperor of Rome at the age of 25.
Below, the funeral of Tiberius, on the left, and on the right, John Stieiner plays Longinus. Longinus was the Imperial Treasurer, which was a title that was made up for the movie, there really was no such person back in the day. At Tiberius' funeral, Caligula feels out the audience to see how they really felt about the old man. Turns out they hated his guts!
The movie shows the closeness of Caligula and his elder sister Drusilla, but it's not even mentioned that Lori Kay Wagner plays Agrippina, the younger sister of Caligula and Drusilla. In 37 AD Caligula was 25, Drusilla was 26, and Agrippina was 22. Thier cousin, Messalina, played by Anneka De Lorenzo, was 12!
